Paper
- Pad of (acid-free) Bristol
board paper; plate-finish is smoother, and regular-finish (also called
vellum finish) has a bit more texture and is preferable. Any size is
fine, but 9" by 12" OR 11" by 14" is ideal.
- A wonderful dual-purpose paper for both types of colored pencil is Fabriano Artistico Hot Press 140# watercolor paper.
- Stonehenge paper is also very popular among colored pencil artists.
Graphite Pencils
Graphite drawing pencils, preferably HB (#2 pencil); also 6H, 7H, 8H, OR 9H (very hard, fine, light) graphite pencil; also, a sheet of heavy tracing paper OR translucent drafting paper.
Eraser
White vinyl eraser, such as cartridge-style eraser or a battery-powered white vinyl eraser.
Colored Pencils
Set of artist-grade wax-based
or vegetable-oil based colored pencils (not pastel pencils), such as (in
alphabetical order) : Caran d'Ache Pablo or Luminance pencils; Derwent
Coloursoft, Studio, or Artist Pencils; Dick Blick Colored Pencils;
Faber-Castell Polychromos; Lyra Rembrandt Polycolors; Sanford Prismacolor or
Lightfast Prismacolor colored pencils . It is wise to select a brand which has
open-stock refills of individual colors readily available. Note: If you
have not made the investment of a large set of colored pencils, feel free to
come to class anyway. There will be demonstration sets
of colored pencils to try and to use for test-drawing.
White Cloth
Clean, soft, white cloth (for buffing), such as a handkerchief or cloth diaper.
OPTIONAL
Pencil Sharpener
Some type of pencil sharpener (hand-held, electric, or battery-powered.)
Putty Adhesive
"Poster putty", such as "Hold-It", "Blu-Tak", or "Uhu" a gentle, reusable putty-type adhesive.
Battery-Operated Eraser
A hand-held, battery-operated
eraser is also a very useful tool (but not required) . It
uses tiny white vinyl eraser refills.
Drafting or Masking Tape
Roll of drafting tape
or masking tape
Blending Pencils
Derwent burnishing and/or blending pencils (new product, Lyra Rembrandt Splender blending pencil, Sanford Prismacolor Colorless Blender blending pencil. Sanford Colorless Blender Marker (if available): this is a marker-type pen with clear, alcohol-based fluid for blending colored pencil. Come prepared to dabble with interesting materials, as well as draw!
If you have a certain drawing project in mind, feel welcome to come with a prepared line drawing (done in light #2 or HB pencil) as a head-start.
